Palabras Literary Salon

With a mission to create intergenerational and intercultural community building, Palabras is a salon inspired by our elders of civil rights consciousness raising and Maya Angelou’s salons in the Harlem Renaissance. Our facilitator, Jen Cheng, brings home-cooking and light snacks to the event as we build bridges by breaking bread together. We sit in a non-heirarchical circle, without a stage. This is not an open-mic as we have a curated guest reader list representing a diverse community. Talk-story and witnessing are ways we can build better understanding of our humanity. We encourage new work and fresh perspectives.

Palabras is a BIPOC-centered literary salon co-hosted with Latinx with Plants, in the open air patio in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. If you want a brief introduction to our vibe, check us out on this recording of KPFK’s Poets Cafe radio show. The next salon is scheduled for a Sunday afternoon, on July 20th 2pm-3:30pm, featuring author Ceasar K. Avelar with his book, God of the Air Hose and Other Blue Collar Poems. RSVP for this event: bit.ly/jul2025palabras

Check out our recent AWP off-site event, Holding Court, featuring BIPOC authors here. Support our BIPOC authors by checking out their books on our Bookshop List.

May 2025: belonging

May’s salon featured author Carolyn Huynh and the theme “belonging.” As Carolyn describes the theme: How do you belong somewhere that doesn’t feel like home? In THE FAMILY RECIPE, I explore themes of yearning, desire and forgiveness — within families, communities, and self. But belonging can be elusive for many, especially for individuals who battle with displacement, generational trauma, and eldest daughter syndrome.

January 2025: retreat

January’s salon featured author Cassandra Lane and the theme “retreat.” From Cassandra: Exploring the collective side of retreat: how stepping back from certain platforms is a way of stepping toward each other, creating a foundation from which artists and writers can rebuild stronger, more grounded networks. It’s a quiet but powerful rebellion—a retreat with the intention to heal, strengthen, and protect our artistic integrity and community. An empowering act for those feeling frustrated or disenfranchised by the social and political landscape, offering a vision of retreat that’s hopeful, intentional, and resilient.

Due to the fires and wind storms, we relocated from our usual co-host of Latinx with Plants to this LA Chinatown location at Studious Coworking Space.

November 2024: gathering

November salon theme was “gathering,” inspired by harvest season. From our featured guest Camille Hernandez (Poet Laureate of Anaheim):

To gather is to be in tune with the ritual of presence. We gather with our people for special events. We gather our belongings when it’s time to move. We gather in our communities to advocate for each other. We gather our memories when mourning a loved one. In this reading, we are exploring the different dimensions of gathering as ritual and relief.

September 2024: cultivating home

This salon’s theme is “cultivating home,” sharing stories of finding that safe place. From our featured poet Brent Ameneyro:

Maya Angelou once wrote, “The ache for home lives in all of us. The safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.” The “safe place” Angelou references can be physical, but it can also be a state of being, a person, or a community. We “cultivate home” on the page with our words, in bookstores and libraries, in gardens, and with people who make us feel safe and loved.

July 2024: returning

July’s edition was a celebration of stories of immigrants and migrants with the theme “returning.” Our featured poet, Sonia Guiñansaca (Nostalgia and Borders) described this theme:

“As in returning to ourselves, to our community, to our homeland, to our culture. I am thinking about migrants and displaced people returning in all the forms we can.”

May 2024: perseverance

We were honored to host a special reading with Lee Herrick (CA State Poet Laureate) to help celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month. The theme was “perserverance” and we had a lively discussion about his poet laureateship, inspiration or tools for writing poetry, and ways that our personal stories influence how we write.

March 2024: matrilineage

We featured Rooja Mohassessy with her new book, WHEN YOUR SKY RUNS INTO MINE. At our regular home of Latinx with Plants in Boyle Heights, this salon’s theme is “matrilineage,” to celebrate March as Women’s Herstory Month. Our guest readers read on this theme and their names are listed in our event listing: bit.ly/palabrasmar2024

January 2024: visionaries

We recently hosted a special West Hollywood edition hosted as part of our Celebrating Civil Rights Heroes event on Saturday January 20, 2024. This salon featured Sean Hill on the theme “visionaries.” Guest readers reflected on the “coalition building” discussion from the 1:30pm panel that featured leaders Shonda Buchanan, Miya Iwataki, Martha González, Rudy Ortega Jr., and Ronna Magy. More information on this January afternoon of sister events here.

November 2023: mitologías

This November 2023 salon featuring Olga García Echeverría with the theme “mitologías” brought discussions of cultural folklore and feminist celebration of La Llorona, dragons, and other stories. Excerpt from Olga’s poetry: “Perhaps life begins again and again / in a giant molcajete / in the cradle of Earth / in the weathered stone passed down / in the hands that pulverize and feed.”

Perceptions

This September salon featuring Jeremy Ra brought new work on the theme “perceptions.” Guest writers included Aruni Wijesinghe and Pastiche Queen (in the photo).

Shortly after the event, we also had the pleasure of being featured in the De Los section of the LA Times.

Continuum

This July 2023 salon featured traci kato-kiriyama (Navigating With(out) Instruments), sharing new work on the theme “continuum.” We also heard a poem of Amy Uyematsu read by traci, in remembrance. Continuum can refer to legacy, succession, spectrum, and we heard how our diverse writers connected to this theme.

Guest writers included: Shonda Buchanan (in photo), Martin Castillo (screenwriter), Benin Lemus, Cynthia Guardado, Jair Bula, Lesley Elizondo, Lisbeth Coiman, and other BIPOC poets and writers.

Departures

This April 2023 salon featured S. Pearl Sharp (The Evening News), sharing new work on the theme “departures.” Inspired by our featured writer’s forthcoming chapbook, What You Left Behind. Departures can refer to the seasons changing, surviving a loss, the closing of a chapter, or come hear how our poets connect to this theme.

This is one of many events that Jen Cheng, our facilitator, was part of for April National Poetry Month.

Please also hear S. Pearl in our conversation about Palabras with KPFK’s radio show Poet’s Cafe.

Growth

January’s salon featured the inspiring Dorothy Randall Gray (Soul Between the Lines), in combination with a casual celebration of Lunar New Year.

This salon was an important moment of community support as we heard the news of the Monterey Park shootings that morning.
